Shocked. Bewildered. Confused. All of those words could be used to describe how the New York Yankees felt after they were swept out of the playoffs in the divisional round by the Seattle Mariners. "I just don't understand how we let this happen," said slugger Alvin Davis. "Based on experience in the playoffs alone I would have figured we would have taken at least one or two." Although they were swept it was not as bad as it necessarily sounds. Both game 2 and 3 went into extra innings, so the Yankees were not completely pushed around by the playoff newcomers. Nevertheless, owner Jeff Cavin was not pleased by the Yanks early exit from the playoffs. "I can not describe how frustrated I am with the team right now. We simply blew it, hats off to the Mariners, but we are a better team than how we played. The team has been slumping since the end of August and they just could not snap out of it. First we blew the division and now this. I will tell you right now heads are going to roll for this, and you will be looking at an updated Yankee team next season." Only time will tell on the off season changes, but it is expected that the team will try to trade for a top notch starting pitcher, and probably a middle infielder as well. With two first round picks in the upcoming draft the team will have some ammunition to get a deal done. Other players that might be on the block include OF Brad Kominski, OF Pat Sheridan, P Lamar Hoyt, P Terry Mulholland, P Todd Stottlemyer, P Sid Fernandez, 3B Clint Hurdle, and maybe even 1988 AL MVP Alvin Davis in the right deal.
